I am always the mediator in my friend group because they constantly fight, and I am tired of doing the emotional labor. How do I get out of this role without losing everyone?

Trapped In Friends Conflict Exhaustion,
Exhausted Group Referee

You are not a friend. You are an unpaid service. You are the human version of the little plastic table at a fast-food restaurant that wobbles but still somehow holds everybody’s nonsense.

And here’s the funniest true part: they don’t love you for you. They love you because you absorb impact. You’re the bumper on their shopping cart. You keep their dumb decisions from leaving a dent. That’s why you feel trapped. Because you’re not in the friend group. You’re in the maintenance department.

So you want out without losing everyone? Wrong ambition. The goal is to make the job so expensive, so inconvenient, so spiritually exhausting for them, that they stop submitting tickets.

Start charging. Not money at first. Charge in rituals. Require an agenda. Require a 24-hour cooling-off period. Require that anyone who wants your mediation must bring a typed statement of what they did wrong. Two paragraphs minimum. If they can’t admit fault, they can’t book you. Tell them your calendar is backed up with other clients. Make it sound official. Make it sound humiliating.

Then, when they inevitably ignore your new policies, you go pro. You monetize. Congratulations, you are now a conflict consultant. Your rate is whatever number makes them blink like a cartoon character. And if they complain, you hit them with the most lethal phrase in the English language: “That’s my boundary.”

Here’s the beauty. Either they grow up and solve their own mess, or they implode in a glorious fireworks show that doesn’t require your hands anywhere near the fuse. Either way, you’re free. And freedom, my friend, is priceless. But your time? Your time is billable.
