Make Surprise In-Laws Regret Showing Up Again
My in-laws keep dropping by unannounced and they stay way too long. How do I get them to stop without starting a war in the family?
Unannounced Visits Endless Resentment,
Porch Sentinel Pat
You already have a war. You just don’t have the uniforms yet. An unannounced in-law visit isn’t a friendly pop-in. It’s a soft invasion. It’s a little flag planted in your living room that says, “We live here emotionally, and we’re just checking the locks.”
People who respect you call first. People who don’t respect you treat your front door like a suggestion. And the problem with letting it slide is it teaches them your house is a public park with indoor plumbing. Today it’s a two-hour visit. Next month they’ve got a toothbrush in your cup and they’re criticizing your skillet like they paid the mortgage with a casserole.
Here’s what you do: you stay polite. Poisonously polite. You weaponize hospitality until it becomes a deterrent. When they appear, act delighted, then immediately hand them a tiny task. Something small. Something constant. “Perfect timing, we’re reorganizing the pantry by expiration date.” “Great, you can help me test every smoke detector.” They came for comfort; you give them a light, relentless inconvenience wearing a sweater vest.
And you do not pause your life for them. If you were leaving to run errands, you still leave. If you were about to mop, you mop. If you were about to eat a sad, silent dinner in peace, you keep eating it like a monk guarding a sacred ritual. Let them sit in the awkward truth of being extra.
Because surprise visitors survive on one resource: you scrambling. Stop scrambling. Make your home feel like a well-run embassy with strict visiting hours. They’ll either start calling first, or they’ll find a new hobby. Either way, sovereignty is restored.
