How to Avoid Birthday Fuss and Still Get It

My birthday is today. I told people at home and at work not to make a big deal out of it, but now I am worried I either get an awkward office spectacle or nobody acknowledges it at all. What do I do?

Dreading Birthday Attention Silence,
Candace No-Fussington

You said the magic adult lie. Don’t make a big deal. That sentence is the social equivalent of cutting the brake lines and then acting surprised the car won’t stop. You didn’t give guidance. You issued a trap. Now everybody around you is trying to defuse a bomb with oven mitts on.

Because here’s what you really meant: make it a big deal, but make it tasteful. Celebrate me, but do it in a way that doesn’t require me to stand there like a hostage while Dave from accounting sings in a key only dogs can hear. You want the old-school respect. The grandmother phone call energy. The card with an actual signature and maybe a crisp five, not an office card with HBD! from a guy you’ve never seen upright.

So you do what any reasonable adult does. You weaponize bureaucracy. You issue a Birthday Specification Sheet. One card. No singing. No circle. Cake may be delivered silently to the desk like a diplomatic pouch. Candles are banned because nobody looks dignified being wished at. If someone violates the protocol, they lose signing privileges for the rest of the quarter.

And don’t stop there. You audit. Who remembered without a reminder? Who only remembered because a screen told them? Grade them. Not publicly, of course. Publicly you smile. Privately you keep a little ledger like you’re the IRS of affection.

Now, I’m going to say something brave. A little fuss is nice. It means you exist. It means people noticed you didn’t die this year. Also, for the record, it is my birthday too. Today. Monday. And I do not want a fuss. I want a fuss delivered quietly, in compliance, and immediately.
